Nuclear War Preparation and Survival

Nuclear War Preparation
The time to build a fallout shelter or think about where you might shelter in place is not when the intercontinental ballistic missiles are in the air. Unless you live in a dense urban setting or near a counter-force target (sub-pen, minuteman missile site, USAF Base) you could survive the initial blast with proper planning.

WHAT YOU DO DURING THE FIRST 15 MINUTES MAY DETERMINE WHETHER YOUR FAMILY LIVES OR DIE.

Scenario #1

You haven't made any preparations and are stuck at home and your house does not have a basement.

Assuming you cannot find a cave, tunnel or subway, go to an interior room with sufficient water and food to last for at least 24 hours and as long as 48 hours If possible.

Key Point #1: Radiation Reduction Over Time

Seven hours after a nuclear explosion, the residual radioactivity will have decreased to about 10% of its amount at one hour, and after another 48 hours (about 2 days) it will have decreased to 1%. It is a good idea to have a transistor radio that can monitor emergency channels so you can determine the radiation levels in your area so you can determine when it is safe to leave your shelter.

Scenario #2

You are stuck at home but have a basement that is covered on at least three sides with dirt all the way up to the top of the foundation. The optimal place for protection is the corner of your basement, which has the greatest amount of dirt covering the foundation and is located behind a walled off section of the basement. Same as above, take your water, food, and communication devices with you and be prepared to stay there for at least 24 to 48 hours (about 2 days).

Scenario # 3

You find yourself in a dense urban setting Inside or outside of buildings constructed with concrete.

Get off the street and into the center of the building or basement of the building, or even a deep subway tunnel that is well underground and shelter in place for at least 24 to 48 hours (about 2 days). The same instructions apply to a situation where you find yourself in an automobile. You must get underground or to the inside of a well-constructed building. Staying in your car or on the street will assure you of nothing but death.

Scenario #4 - Different Degrees of Preparation.

The following is an excerpt from Book II which involves Radiation exposure after a nuclear blast:

“For those fortunate enough to survive the static overpressure by being in a fortified bomb shelter or far enough from the blast and thermal radiation, there will still be residual radiation effects. For our purposes, all distances are from ground zero or in a straight line from the epicenter (for an airburst) to the ground 170 ~ Thomas J. Yeggy ~ before we start measuring. The distances are approximations, and some of what I will say comes under the heading of an educated guess. Whether you die from radiation or get sick and recover depends on too many variables to cover in our short presentation, but here are some ideas.

“As you can imagine, after a nuclear blast, there are all kinds of unstable atoms possessing an excess of energy or mass or both. To reach stability, these atoms give off, or emit, the excess energy or mass. This excess energy can be emitted from the nucleus as gamma radiation, transferred to one of its electrons to release it as a conversion electron, or used to create an alpha particle or beta particle. These emissions are called radiation. Radioactivity refers to the amount of ionizing harmful radiation, which represents how many atoms there are in the material decay in a given time period.

“We measure the amount of radiation in a cubic centimeter of dry air in Roentgens. If you have 1 Roentgen in a cubic centimeter of air, that is enough to set free one electrostatic unit of charge. Still, we are most concerned with how any radioactivity affects the body, particularly in a cumulative amount. An extremely high dose absorbed in a few hours can be just as deadly as a lower dose over a week or several months. We measure absorption in the body by rads or rems.

“Rad stands for radiation absorbed dose. One rad equals a dose causing 100 ergs of energy to be absorbed by one gram of matter, the same as the amount of energy used by a common house fly performing one pushup. The rad is the measurement of the radiation absorbed by the material or tissue, while the rem is a measurement of the biological effect of the absorbed radiation. For beta and gamma radiation, the dose equivalent is the same as the absorbed dose, so one rad is equal to one rem. By contrast, the equivalent is larger than the absorbed dose for alpha and neutron radiation because these types of radiation are more damaging to the human body per unit absorbed. So, we are primarily concerned with rems because they give us the best indication of biological harm.”

He nodded, and several slides flicked across the screen behind him in rapid succession. For those in the audience who still didn’t understand the grim realities of radiation exposure, the images may have seemed like creations of Hollywood makeup artists. The audience was, without exception, men of science. But still, Ogawa noticed more than a few squirming in their seats, perhaps wondering if the images on the slides were real. One pasty-faced fellow near the back bolted for the door, undoubtedly for the restroom.

“I’ll not belabor my talk with too many more statistics, but it is imperative to understand the following,” Ogawa said. “Theoretically, if a person is not killed by the blast or thermal radiation or chooses to render aid within certain areas, those exposed to 1,000 rems will die within four to six days. Anyone who encounters 600 rems will likely die and, out of those who do survive, 18 percent of them will die of cancer. Anyone getting 500 rem exposure will likely die within thirty days. The residual radiation that will be carried up into the mushroom cloud and then spread over several hundred kilometers downwind will ultimately kill hundreds of thousands if not millions over the next year. My estimate of the immediate deaths within the greater New York City area is four million. Longer term, that number will likely exceed five million.
